Syed Zulfiqar Ali Hashmi as his full name was born on 29th December 1964 at Okara to Syed Mazhar Ali Hashmi. He got his early education from Government Millat High School, Gujranwala from where he passed his matriculation in 1979. Later he enrolled himself into Government College, Satellite Town Gujranwala for his Intermediate and Graduation, which he passed in 1982 and 1983 respectively.
He played cricket for his school and college teams but his cricket flourished when he joined the Satellite Town Gymkhana cricket club in 1978. He was a right-hand batsman and off-break bowler.

In 1983-84, he made his first-class debut for Gujranwala against Lahore Whites at Gujranwala in the BCCP Patrons Trophy. He remained unbeaten scoring 0 & 2 and did not take any wickets in both innings of the match. His captain put faith in his cricketing abilities and gave him another chance against Karachi Whites at Gujranwala but he again failed in this match too. He scored only 1 not out & 5 besides taking 2-72 & 0-8 in the match.
In 1984-85, besides his miserable performance, he was kept in the Gujranwala team for the season’s BCCP Patrons Trophy. In the first match against Lahore Division at Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot he took 1-44 & 2-20 and did not require to bat in both innings of the match. In his next match against Faisalabad at Bohranwala Ground, Faisalabad, he scored 0 & 21 and took 1-49 & 1-27 to end the match.
1985-86, while playing in the match against Lahore Whites at LCCA Ground in the BCCP Patrons Trophy, he made 1 & 9 besides taking 0-69 & 0-39 and Gujranwala lost this match by 9 wickets. In the next match against Lahore Division at Jinnah Stadium Sialkot he took 3-54 & 2-8 and crushed Lahore Division by innings & 41 runs on the second day of the match. He was included in Zone (C) team that played in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. In the opening match against Zone (A) at Jinnah Stadium, Sialkot where he made 22 runs and took 1-55 and was not required to bowl in the opponent’s first innings. After this match, he was overlooked and was not considered for the trophy’s remaining matches.
In 1986-87, a new first-class tournament was inaugurated. While playing for his home team Gujranwala against Pakistan Railways at Municipal Stadium, Gujranwala he scored 13 runs and did not bat in the second innings besides taking 0-10 in the opponent’s only innings. This also proved to be his last outing in a first-class match of his career. After this match, he was again overlooked by the selectors and was not considered for selection.
Overall during his career, he scored only 74 runs at 10.57 with the highest score of 22 and took 13 wickets at 39.38 with a best of 3-54 in 8 first-class matches from 1983-84 to 1986-87.
At present, he is running his own Young Combined Star cricket club, where he is also coaching and giving tips to youngsters.
